An Important Day for Canada and Human Rights
Please pardon the slight detour from the normal sort of family news that we post here. Today however was a historic and important day for upholding the true values of Canadians; that of equality for all and protection of minority rights. For those who don't know, Canada's national government finally got around to affirming the rights of gays and lesbians to marry someone of the same sex. For more official news, click here:

It's been a long struggle for these and other rights for gays and lesbians in Canada, and around the world, but I'm glad to see that Canada is doing the right thing and helping to set the example. I know that many in Canada were against this bill passing, perhaps some even in my own family. But what they must realise is that their objections are based on emotion, and have no baring in law. To deny gays and lesbians the right to enter a government contract of marriage is no different than denying two people from different ethnicities the right to marry, or of two different faiths. In addition, I feel the government went of of it's way to protect the rights of religious groups to not have to perform any marriage they feel goes against their beliefs. All in all, a good day for Canada and humanity.

I read an article in the NOW yesterday about the struggle outside the developed world. Apparently, there are a lot of people annoyed with the attention that marriage is getting because it's drowning out pleas for MUCH more basic human rights (e.g., freedom from murder and torture) that are denied LGBT in the rest of the world.
True enough. I think that's a serious situation that needs to be eradicated. But it's not any excuse to delay ratification of equal rights for all Canadians, since Canada is a country that already has clearly written rights and freedoms that were being ignored. It's very hard to wipe out world hunger without first tackling the problem in your own local neighbourhood.
